The Smiths

In all my life I never saw so many tears than from the family across the street . Their religious beliefs left them hopeless & despondent with each new death in the family. The family was catholic and they did not believe in the words of Jesus who said you have to born again. They believed in a strange version of the resurrection of souls, an obscure teaching which has lost its true meaning. Now it’s back. Blessed is the resurrection of souls by the Holy Spirit who raises up the Soul to Heaven and then brings it back to life.

But for some reason the Family across the street remained insistent on the cruel belief that you only live once. And so when the patriarch of the Family died his wife cried all night long. But the Holy Spirit soon began moving among the family. The Holy Spirit has away of making even the most limited of beliefs count for something. And so the family went suffering the deaths of their members who were advanced in their years, but the work of Holy Spirit “the comforter” compensated for their lack of wisdom.

The next day a man from a Persia whose name was Abel and who believed in reincarnation moved in next door and was subjected to the emotions of his neighbors. He soon realized his neighbors were going through mourning and were depressed. Then he noticed that their lawn was unkempt and he offered when coming home from work to cut their grass and tend their garden. Later he noticed the grandchildren and children when they visited their parents and grandparents helping them to cope with the deaths in the family , aunt, uncles, great uncles etcetera.

Mrs Smith was so grateful to Abel that she invited him to join the family for dinner. Abel accepted. When the time to eat came around the discussion at the table went back and forth about the death of Edward Smith, the Grandfather and patriarch of the family to matters of the pregnancy of one of the Mrs Smith’s daughters causing Mrs Smith to have terribly mixed emotions.

And so when the conversation shifted as to what to name the child, Abel was asked his opinion. Without hesitation he said he would name the child “Edward.” When asked to explain himself, he said he came from a large family who believed in reincarnation and they believed that if the timing was just right and the family prayed and asked the Holy Spirit to return the soul, it would be done. And so the soul would have his name back and he would born again into the family who loved him so much. Reincarnation beliefs have their graces.

However, the ethics of Abels reincarnation beliefs are not text book. Naturally understood is the fact when people who believe in God and trust in the Holy Spirit and show love and support, a family can believe that the soul of their love one has returned. And each family would have rules so as to make sure the child is not psychologically traumatized and lots of prayer and wisdom would be required.

However, think about how awkward it would be to tell a child later in his life that he was reincarnation of his great grandfather.

Naming a child after a dearly departed is not fair. It is not fair to compare him to his previous self. The whole point of reincarnation is not to know your past, but to create a new and better you each time around.

It is natural to assume that there are books about the graces of reincarnation beliefs that have been written and that we have all forgotten about. Perhaps the words of Jesus are all we need “You must be born again.”
